Tonto National Forest

The Legends of Superior Trail connects the historic mining town of Superior with the Arizona Trail, 6 miles to the west. Along the way it passes through the high Sonoran Desert, the remains of the abandoned town of Pinal, and the riparian forest along Queen Creek, all while under the gaze of the majestic Picketpost Mountain to the south and Apache Leap to the east.

This Environmental Assessment discloses the direct, indirect, and cumulative environmental impacts that would result from the proposed action and alternatives.

In May 2010 the Tonto National Forest (TNF) completed a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review of the proposed action to authorize mining pre-feasibility activities on the Globe Ranger District in Pinal and Gila Counties, Arizona.

In response to Resolution Copper Mining’s (RCM’s) submittal of a plan of operations for pre-feasibility activities, the Forest Service prepared this EA in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This EA discloses the direct, indirect and cumulative environmental impacts that would result from the proposed action and alternatives.

The purpose of this report is to summarize current knowledge of population and habitat trends for species identified as management indicator species (MIS) for the Tonto National Forest.

All containment lines on the south, west and east are holding. Yesterday, isolated islands of vegetation burned, sometimes producing smoke visible from State Highway 60. The fire, overall, was less active than in previous days probably due to increased humidity.
